Learning to Grow With Pets!
When you decide to take in a furry friend, there’s a lot of learning to do. Learning to pee in the litter box or yard, rather than the carpet. Learning to sit, shake, stay. Learning that chasing the mouse string instead of shoe strings makes mom and dad happier. Learning that chewing a bone or rope is preferred over the baseboards. In those first few weeks and months of getting to know one another, there is a lot of growing that takes place.
And sometimes, as pet owners, we realize that we have a thing or two to learn ourselves.
During this time of resolutions as another year has come to a close and a new one begins, there’s a lot that our pets have to teach us, with some habits that we could benefit in picking up. There are some pretty important life lessons in every tug-o-war, every catnip frenzy, every stroke of soft fur. So what can you learn from your new friend and continue to practice all year?
Treat each person with kindness! Wag more, bark less is the saying, right? And this year its more important than ever to come at every situation and encounter with as much grace as you can offer. We have no clue what another person may be going through and the simplest measures of gentleness and care can go a long way.
Patience! If they can hold their bladder during your 9-5, you can practice patience while waiting at the grocery store, in traffic, at a restaurant. Take a deep breath. This year has been stressful for everyone, and showing kindness and patience to others is easier than it feels.
Exercise with enthusiasm! Find a new way to get your body moving. COVID-19 has given us a lot of time to reassess our hobbies and passions. What new ways can you get outside – or indoors – and expend some of that pent-up energy from WFH drab or 4pm sunset energy depletion?
Letting go – it’s okay to have fun! Our pets know better than anyone, it’s important to let loose.
Love fearlessly! Our dogs and cats come running to us with an abundance of love to give, and we could do with softening from how hard this year has made us and embracing the same mentality (socially distanced, of course).
When it comes to educating, owning a pet is an equal opportunity experience. Pay attention!
